Tired of High
Gasoline Prices.
Try
these
Fuel Saving
Tips
From Driving
the 2004 Prius
Hybrid

1. Slow down to the
posted speed limit and save as much as 25%. Slowing
down costs nothing but a little extra time. Speeding
wastes gasoline. Anticipate what's ahead. Coast whenever
possible and allow the generator to decelerate the Prius.
Don't hesitate to use the brakes since some energy is
recovered through braking.
2. Accelerate
at a moderate pace. The Prius has a smooth and even
continuously variable transmission. It's like piloting a
mono-rail. Try not to copy the uneven acceleration
of other cars. Brisk acceleration is
desired because the gasoline engine is most efficient at that
higher RPM. Any extra energy charges the battery. Punching
it wastes gasoline so do not do it. Accelerate briskly to
the desired speed then back off a little to maintain
electric coasting as long as you can.
3. Avoid cold engine starts.
It takes considerable energy to cold start a gasoline
engine and warm it to normal operating temperature. Minimize
cold engine starts by combining many short
trips.

4. Go easy on the heat control and A/C
control. Max hot uses more
fuel in a hybrid. Max A/C uses more energy than A/C set at low
to medium fan speed. Rolling down the windows at highway
speeds will reduce mileage due to increased wind
drag.
5. Regularly check
and maintain proper tire pressure. Low tire pressure
can reduce fuel economy in any vehicle and increase the
chance of tire failure.
6. Perform regular
maintenance. Read your owners manual. Ask
your mechanic about using high quality synthetic blend
oil at your next oil change. Verify that your oil is at the
correct level. It should be one quarter inch below the over
filled mark. Use fuel additives according to manufacturers
instructions. Be careful where you buy fuel. Follow the
directives of your owners manual.
7.
Do not carry unnecessary cargo. Excess weight
reduces fuel economy.
8. Cutback on your overall
energy use. Carbon used in your day to day routine
effects the price. In an oil economy we have to conserve
and convert to keep prices down.
